I was looking for an apartment in NYC. I have been sending out mass emails and this person emailed back. She had a great offer with a large room full of all the amenities for a steal at 600 a month.
Being an out of stater who is somewhat naive I was initially excited so I emailed back showing interest. So "she" sent me some photos and immediately I was uncertain. These pictures of the place looked way to nice for how much I was paying.
So I prodded and she gave back decent answers so I continued. She said that I would need to wire her money but before I did she would send me a contract. This sounded legit so I continued. She said she needed my address and a scan of my driver's license so I complied. Immediately after sending her a picture of my id I felt weird.
TA DAH!!!! It all became clear. Most people, not I, have their SS number on their IDs. That was the whole point of this scam. Being tech savy and know I got screwed I looked up the IP address from the user and found it was being sent through a proxied server.
Having used these servers before to for various reasons I know there is only one reason and that reason is to hide identities. So the moral of this story is you receive a email from this person, CASEY CALLAHAN SECRETARYREPLY1@GMAIL.COM or a photo of my id (steve neuberger) proving legitimacy tell that person to screw off. Scammers.... what a bunch of douches lol.
