Define search engine optimization – a simpletons SEO definition
Please define search engine optimization for me, in English - no jargon. Give me a simple SEO definition that I can understand and take onboard. Show me the way to optimize my site successfully for searches!
SEO is essentially about tailoring a website to suit search engine algorithms which if done properly, pushing all the right buttons at Google, Yahoo, Bing and others – will result in front page rankings for your keyword and the resulting higher traffic that it will bring – this traffic baring revenue potential, question answers and a couple of minutes of internet fame.
Now presumably, search engine optimization would be a doddle. Simply include your pages main keyword several times in your headline and body and there you go…
But it isn’t. Invariably, there is a lot of competition for a particular keyword and it’s traffic. Put it this way, people buy traffic via online advertising. If that keyword is commanding a high cost-per-click (each time a visitor clicks through to visit the site) then you can establish it is pretty competitive.
Of course people would rather enjoy the free, targeted traffic than the expensive commercialized traffic. So the market for free traffic is so much bigger. And so is the market for ‘search engine optimization’.

Google Adword’s Keyword Estimator Tool.
To conclude my SEO definition – search engine optimization is the tailoring of webpages or a website to suit search engine algorithms.
